I wish I could say it was because I cared so much about the planet and future generations.
But in truth, I got into it because I wanted to write a book about it. Books were my first love and interest, and then that was the gateway.
Why does this matter?
I think it matters because it shows that you don’t need to start out as a greenie or climate scientist or have the most noble motives starting out. If you start with your interest and passion, that can open the floodgates.
And because climate change affects so much, there will be links to your interests and passions if you go looking for them.
We need to meet people where they are. And often where people are is wanting to help, wanting to make a difference to this crisis, but not knowing how. Not knowing the full range of options to help.
And the thing is, we need everyone’s voices in the conversation. Whether you’re a carpenter or a salesperson or a journalist. For proof, type “how can I make a difference to climate change as a [profession]?” into AI co-pilot, and you’ll get a suite of ideas.
I believe that there are ways for people to make a difference when there is that shift in mindset, that belief that they can, even if it’s starting small.
So maybe the point of this post, is for us to start there. To think: from my life, and my interests, and my work, what are the ways that I could do something?
For me, my passions are writing and digital communications. So, I will be thinking about how I could make a difference within those spheres, sharing my thoughts here.
It’s not enough, but perhaps it will turn into more with time.
Maybe for all of us it’s just about starting the journey – and then seeing where it takes us. It might be somewhere completely unexpected.
